About us
We're a small team that reads the manual so you don't have to
PickKoala is an independent product-review and buying-guide publication. We research everyday products across tech, apparel, home, footwear and streetwear — then tell you plainly which ones are worth the money.
How this started
PickKoala began in 2019 as a shared notes file between four friends who kept asking each other the same question: “is this actually good, or just well marketed?” Buying a pair of headphones or a winter jacket had turned into a research project — dozens of tabs, contradictory reviews, and a nagging feeling that half the “top 10” lists were written by people who had never opened the box.
So we started writing down what we found. Which claims in the marketing copy held up. Which specs actually mattered for daily use. Which returns were easy and which were a fight. The notes file became a newsletter, the newsletter became this site, and the site is still run on the same principle: say the useful thing, including the part the brand would rather you didn't read.
What we actually do
We are not a testing lab and we will never pretend to be one. What we do is narrower and, we think, more useful: we aggregate and interpret evidence that already exists and is hard to find in one place.
- We read the primary material. Manufacturer spec sheets, user manuals, warranty and return policies, safety certifications.
- We read owner reports at scale. Long-run reviews, repair threads and return-rate chatter — the months-later evidence that launch coverage skips.
- We build comparisons, not hype. Every guide is organised around scenarios (“best for a small apartment”) rather than a meaningless overall score.
- We date everything. Each guide carries a last-checked date so you know how fresh the advice is.
How we make money
PickKoala is reader-supported. When you click a link to a retailer and buy something, we may earn a small commission. That is the entire business model — no sponsored posts, no paid placements, no brand can buy its way onto a list or into a higher position.
We think that model is worth being blunt about: a commission-funded site only survives if its recommendations keep working. The moment we start steering readers toward bad products, the readers leave and so does the revenue. Honest advice is not a noble sacrifice here, it is the whole strategy.

What we won't do
- We won't invent ratings, star scores, or “we tested this for 30 days” claims we can't back up.
- We won't quote a price as fact. Prices move constantly, so we say check current price and link out.
- We won't let a brand review a draft before publication.
- We won't claim hands-on experience we didn't have. Where a guide is based on published specifications, we say so.
