Side sleeping is the most common position and the one that punishes a bad pillow hardest. Your shoulder creates a gap between the mattress and your head, and if the pillow is too flat, your neck spends the night bent sideways. If it is too tall, your chin tilts up and your upper back complains instead.

That gap differs from person to person. Shoulder width, mattress firmness and how you position your arm all change the height you need, which is why the same pillow can be perfect for one side sleeper and useless for another.

The one number that decides it

Compressed loft, not the height in the photograph. A pillow that arrives looking generous will squash down under the weight of your head, and what matters is the height it settles at.

The test is simple. Lie on your side in your normal position and have someone look, or use a mirror, at whether your head is level with your spine. If your head droops toward the mattress, you need more height. If your chin is pushed up, you need less.

Side sleepers with broader shoulders usually need a taller pillow than the standard medium loft sold in most shops. That is the single most common reason a side sleeper is unhappy with a pillow that gets good reviews from back sleepers.

Fill types and how they behave

Shredded memory foam

Small pieces of foam that can be removed or added through a zipper. This is the only fill that lets you change the height of the pillow after purchase, which makes it the most forgiving option. The tradeoffs are a lumpier feel and fill that shifts during the night.

Solid memory foam

Contours closely and holds its shape, but the loft is fixed and the material sleeps warm. It also firms up in a cold bedroom, so the first few minutes of the night feel different from the rest.

Latex

Springy, breathable and heavy. Latex holds its shape for years and does not compress into a flat pancake, though the bounce is a matter of taste and the pillows are substantial to move around.

Fibre and down alternative

Cheap, soft and familiar. Fibre pillows are comfortable for a few months and then flatten, which is why side sleepers often end up stacking two of them. They are the right choice for a guest bed and a poor long-term answer for a main pillow.

What we would not pay extra for

  • Pillows marketed with cooling gel panels. They feel cool for a few minutes and then equalise.
  • Contoured neck pillows with a fixed ridge. They fit a very specific body shape and are unforgiving when they miss.
  • A pillow that claims to be right for every sleeping position. It is designed for the average, which is nobody.
  • Very expensive down for a side sleeper. Softness does not compensate for insufficient loft.
  • Pillow sprays and scented inserts. Sort out the pillow itself first.

A short decision process

  1. Measure your sleeping gap by pushing a hand under your neck while lying on your side with your pillow in place.
  2. Choose adjustable fill if you are unsure, because you can tune it over the first fortnight.
  3. Go for latex or a ventilated grid if you wake up hot.
  4. Check the compressed height rather than the loft in the product image.
  5. Buy a washable protector at the same time. It keeps dust mites and sweat out of the fill.
  6. Check the current price and the return window, and expect to need more than one night to judge a pillow.

When a new pillow will not help

If your mattress is sagging in the middle, no pillow will keep your spine level. If you wake with shoulder pain rather than neck pain, the problem may be the mattress or your arm position. And if the discomfort comes with tingling or numbness down an arm, that is a medical question. Changing pillows is the cheapest experiment in the bedroom and usually worth trying first, but it is not a treatment.

How this guide was researched

This guide draws on published specifications such as fill material, stated loft and available sizes, along with care instructions and the recurring themes in owner reviews written after months of nightly use, where fill migration and compression show up. We did not sleep on these pillows and we do not quote prices. Where we describe how a fill behaves, we are describing material properties and consistent owner experience rather than the results of our own testing.

Our picks in detail

Best overall

Coop Home Goods

01 Coop Home Goods Original Adjustable Pillow

A shredded-fill pillow you can open and top up or empty out until the height is right, which is the only reliable way to match a pillow to your shoulders. The fill shifts through the night and needs occasional fluffing.

Best for: Side sleepers who want to adjust loft rather than guess at it

  • Shredded memory foam fill with an inner liner and a zipper for adjusting
  • Extra fill included in the box
  • Washable outer cover
  • Medium loft that can be raised or lowered by removing fill

Pros

  • Adjustable height solves the most common fitting problem
  • Keeps its support instead of flattening like a fibre pillow
  • Replacement covers and extra fill are sold separately

Cons

  • Shredded foam feels lumpy to anyone used to a solid pillow
  • Traps some heat compared with latex or down
  • Needs shaking out to redistribute the fill

Best firm support

Saatva

02 Saatva Latex Pillow

A latex core with a removable outer layer, which gives a firm, springy surface that holds its shape all night. It is heavier than most pillows and the bounce takes getting used to.

Best for: Side sleepers with broader shoulders who need firm, stable support

  • Latex core pillow with a removable outer pillow layer
  • Breathable perforated latex construction
  • Cotton outer cover
  • Sold in standard and king sizes

Pros

  • Holds a consistent height through the night
  • Latex sleeps cooler than solid memory foam
  • Removable layer lets you change the overall height

Cons

  • Heavy and awkward to move
  • Firm bounce is a matter of taste
  • Expensive compared with adjustable shredded foam

Best for hot sleepers

Purple

03 Purple Harmony Pillow

A grid core with a ventilated design that lets air move through the pillow rather than trapping it. The grid feel is distinctive, and the price is high for anyone who dislikes it.

Best for: Side sleepers who wake up hot and find foam pillows stuffy

  • Hyper-elastic grid core with a ventilated construction
  • Moisture-wicking outer cover
  • Sold in low and tall heights
  • Available in standard and king sizes

Pros

  • Notably cooler than foam or shredded fill
  • Tall version suits side sleepers well
  • Support does not collapse over the night

Cons

  • The grid texture is not for everybody
  • Premium price
  • Cover cannot be tumble dried aggressively without shrinking

Best memory foam

Tempur-Pedic

04 Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow

A solid memory foam pillow that conforms to the head and neck and gives a slow, sinking feel. It sleeps warm, and unlike a shredded pillow you cannot change its height, so the loft has to suit you from day one.

Best for: Sleepers who like the contouring feel of memory foam

  • Solid TEMPUR material core
  • Removable, washable cover
  • Medium profile designed for back and side sleeping
  • Published material specification from the manufacturer

Pros

  • Contours closely to the neck and shoulder
  • Holds shape for years without clumping
  • Cover washes easily

Cons

  • No height adjustment
  • Sleeps warm and can feel dense in summer
  • Slower to recover its shape in a cold room

Best adjustable alternative

Nest Bedding

05 Nest Bedding Easy Breather Pillow

Another shredded-fill pillow with a zippered inner case, sold with extra fill and an optional custom loft option. It is comparable to the Coop rather than clearly better, and the fill is a little denser.

Best for: Side sleepers who want control over fill and a firmer feel

  • Shredded memory foam fill with a zippered inner case
  • Additional fill included for adjusting height
  • Washable outer cover
  • Sold in standard, queen and king sizes

Pros

  • Adjustable fill lets you dial in the loft
  • Outer cover is easy to wash
  • Holds shape better than fibre pillows

Cons

  • Denser fill than some adjustable pillows
  • Needs breaking in and regular fluffing
  • Not widely stocked in stores, so returns involve shipping

Best budget

Beckham Hotel Collection

06 Beckham Hotel Collection Bed Pillows

A widely bought two-pack of soft fibre pillows at a very low price. They feel generous at first and flatten within months, which makes them a reasonable stopgap rather than a long-term answer for a side sleeper.

Best for: Guest beds, spare rooms and a cheap way to test a higher loft

  • Sold as a two-pack
  • Down-alternative fibre fill
  • Machine washable according to the manufacturer
  • Soft to medium support aimed at side and back sleepers

Pros

  • Very low cost for two pillows
  • Machine washable and easy to replace
  • Soft, familiar feel

Cons

  • Compresses and loses height within months
  • Needs two pillows stacked for most side sleepers
  • Fill clumps after washing

The bottom line

Our verdict

For most side sleepers the Coop Home Goods Original is the safest buy, because you can add or remove fill until your head sits level with your spine instead of guessing at a loft from a product photo. If you want a firmer, more stable pillow and do not mind the price, the Saatva latex model holds its height well, and the Purple Harmony is the one to choose if you overheat at night. The budget two-pack is fine for a guest room; just do not expect it to survive a year as your main pillow. Check the current price, and give any new pillow a fortnight before deciding, because neck comfort is a slow verdict.

Frequently asked questions

How high should a side sleeper's pillow be?

Tall enough that your head is level with the line of your spine, filling the gap between your shoulder and your ear. For most adults that lands somewhere around four to six inches of compressed height, and more for broader shoulders. An adjustable pillow lets you find that without buying three failures first.

Is a shredded memory foam pillow better than a solid one?

They solve different problems. Shredded fill can be added or removed to change height, and it stays cooler because air moves between the pieces, but it shifts and needs fluffing. Solid foam gives consistent, contouring support but cannot be adjusted and sleeps warmer.

How often should I replace a pillow?

When it no longer holds its height. Fold it in half and let go; a fibre pillow that stays folded is spent. Fibre pillows commonly flatten in under a year, while latex and quality foam can last several years. A washable protector extends the life of any pillow.

Do I need a special pillow for neck pain?

Not necessarily a marketed cervical pillow. The important thing is that the pillow fills the space between your shoulder and your ear so your neck is not bent sideways. If your neck pain is persistent or comes with numbness, that is a conversation with a clinician rather than a bedding purchase.
